CHRIS ALLISON, PART 2

Hiiiiiyo! Chris here. Remember me? I’m the first-year senior you met last week.
Yup, you read that right. “First year senior.” With so many classes to take, I don’t think four years will be enough. Shhh… don’t tell my parents.

The first week of school is past! Cal State Fullerton
doesn’t miss a beat. We’re really hitting the ground running, as I’m
already working on a fun project to be seen by Disney artists. Cal State
Fullerton participates in the ACME program (www.acmeanimation.org), a
non-profit organization that brings professionals working in the industry
together with students to talk about the student’s work. Every Thursday,
our class goes to the bottom of the library to teleconference with pros
(usually on their lunch break) from a plethora of studios, from feature film
to television to games to you name it. Last week, two story artists from
Disney’s new Short Film department came in to talk to students about a
challenge they issued on ACME. Students broadcasted their artwork and got
comprehensive critiques from the professionals. I’m particularly excited
about these two individuals because I’d like to become a story artist
myself. They gave critiques of artwork and will be back in a month to check
up on us.

ACME is great because it puts you into contact with the professionals who
you’re looking to get hired by. They get to see your face, you talk with
them, and you hear straight from the horse’s mouth what skill sets they’re
looking for in a prospective future employee. It’s a great program and it
really makes Cal State Fullerton unique in that there is a strong bond
between the academic sector and the professional industry that you might not
find at other campuses.

Back to the drawing board! I don’t want to disappoint these Disney folks!

Your pal,
Chris

  1. hey chris, I have a question for you. Can you concentrate on 3D animation specifically at Fullerton or do they only offer 2D animation classes. To me, detailed 3D animation is much more intriguing than "bland" 2D animation.
But that, of course, is just my opinion.

    great post btw

  2. Hey David!

Great question! We have a great 3D program here at Cal State Fullerton. We have a whole lab devoted to machines to run Maya software (the software bigshots like Pixar and Dreamworks use). We even have motion capture software, because our campus is super cutting edge and cool like that.

Now with that said, don't expect to dodge the 2D bullet altogether. At CSUF, we really stress the basics, and you learn those traditionally on pencil and paper in Introduction to Animation (taught currently by a former Disney animator). But this is beneficial because it seems to be what the professionals WANT from students. Brad Bird on the Incredibles was using programs to draw over the models in Maya to push poses and such. Having a "hybrid" background will make you that much more valuable in the market because you'll have the fluency in both languages, so to speak, even tho you're emphasizing one or the other.

Make no mistake about it tho, whether 2D or 3D, CSUF will teach you the skills to make your animation exciting and entertaining!

    Good question!

    Your pal,
    Chris

  3. wow! It is so great to know that professional artists from Disney help out the students in Cal State Fullerton. My dream is also to become a story artist just like you and work for Disney. Now i know the animation classes i want to take when i attend Cal State Fullerton will benefit me. :)

    Thanks for the post.

  4. Hey Tiffany!

One thing about ACME is that you don't need to be enrolled in the class to participate online. I would highly recommend signing up for an account at ACME once you become a student at Cal State Fullerton. Then all you need to do is talk to Dana Lamb, one of our all-star teachers, and he'll validate your account. Then you can start posting right away and getting the feedback you need to help you reach your goal! Don't wait for the class, start right away!
